The University of Florida's Genetics Institute (UFGI) is firmly committed to promoting and supporting cross-campus interdisciplinary research in genetics. It is particularly interested in fostering partnerships in bioinformatics and nanotechnology as they are becoming critically important in genetics R & D. In order to provide an added incentive for such collaborations, the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), UFGI and the College of Engineering (COE) will award two seed money grants of $50,000/year for two years. The awards are intended to enable investigators to generate sufficient preliminary data to allow submission of a program project or center grant to a federal funding agency (e.g. NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA, etc.). To be eligible for funding the proposals must be for new and innovative research, and include investigators from more than one UF college. Successful applicants will be expected to submit a federal grant proposal by the end of the second year of the award. All funds awarded must be spent by the end of the second year; no carry over will be possible. Funding will come directly from OSR. The UFGI and COE Seed Grants Committee (Indra K. Vasil, Chair, Su-Shing Chen, Nick Muzyczka, and Pam Soltis) will publicize the competition, review the proposals and select the awardees. It will also have the responsibility for monitoring the progress of proposed research and the required submission of a federal grant application. If the first round of awards is deemed successful, the competition may be renewed on an annual basis.
Proposals for seed grants should be submitted electronically by October 1, 2005, to
Indra K. Vasil (ikv@ifas.ufl.edu
The proposals should be no more than 10 pages (single spaced) long in the following format:
Page 1 - Title of the proposal. Names of principal investigators, their affiliations and contact information (campus mailing addresses, telephone and telefax numbers, and e-mail addresses). Abstract (200 words).
Page 2 - Introduction. Define research objectives, provide the rationale and importance of proposed research, and explain the interdisciplinary nature of the work.
Page 3 - Budget and Time Line of Proposed Research. The bulk of the funds should be spent on salaries of post-docs and/or students. They are not to be used for travel or for salaries of the PIs.
Pages 4-6 - Detailed description of proposed research, techniques used, and expected results. Literature Cited.
Pages 7-10 - Abbreviated vitae (two pages only for each PI).
